Traditional and Modern Upholstery
The excitement with upholstery is you never know what you might find under the covers! You may require a recover or a complete rebuild of the upholstery, this will be dependent on the condition of the internal material within the piece of furniture, such as the springs and stuffing in traditional furniture or the foam in modern upholstery.
Traditional upholstery involves the use of traditional methods with many layers and many hours of skill and attention to detail, but the results can be amazing. Chairs dating from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries fall into this category and use natural materials such as coir (coconut) fibre, hessian or linen, webbing and springs, tacks for fixings and hand stitching techniques to give outstanding results.
The use of traditional methods can be costly but don’t worry, more modern techniques can be used to suit your budget.
In modern upholstery chairs date from the 1940’s, post-second World War. They often use foam, webbing and modern spring systems and staples for fixings as well as hand stitched borders. The results are often much quicker resulting in lower material and labour costs, but not without achieving the wow factor!
